In an effort to help build responsible energy consumption habits and emboldened by the success of pilot projects in Tauragė and Plungė, this year Ignitis Group will expand the first energy efficiency education programme in Lithuania to the national scale. The programme, which educates students from grades 7 to 11 on energy and responsible energy consumption, invites all schools from the cities and rural areas of Lithuania to create a responsible and energy smart generation together.
The programme was initiated in 2022 and includes free professional development courses, access to education plans and lesson plans for teachers that were prepared by green energy experts, tours and educational events. Remote teacher training will take place from February to June. Teachers will be able to use the knowledge they gain during the training in their lessons.
The content on responsible energy consumption provided in the lesson plans and education tools prepared specifically for the programme can be easily adapted for different purposes, from physics or geography lessons to English lessons. Teachers will be able to use it independently, at the time and in the scope convenient to them. The education tools provided to teachers are based on modern pedagogical methods and focused on engaging content that is attractive for students, boosting their interest in important topics.
“They surveys conducted before and after the pilot programmes in Tauragė and Plungė showcased that they had a positive impact on students’ awareness of the impact of their personal actions and choices on the environment, climate change processes and efforts to mitigate them. We were proven right once again that all changes start with education. That’s why we decided to expand the programme to all Lithuania,” says Vaiva Rutkauskaitė, Head of Education Programmes of Ignitis Group.
According to V. Rutkauskaitė, a more intimate encounter of modern energy challenges and opportunities both increases students’ awareness and encourages them to learn about such topics further. In the future they even might want to study or have a career in this field. V. Rutkauskaitė believes that engaging students and encouraging them to choose technical and engineering studies, which are important to the energy sector, is crucial as it will ensure the development of sustainability-oriented sectors, smooth green transition and climate-neutral economy in Lithuania.
