Ignitis Renewables in cooperation with RTU will implement the #EnergySmartSTART scholarship programme in Latvia

A cooperation agreement has been signed between Ignitis Renewables, the leading green energy company in the Baltics, and the Riga Technical University Development Fund for scholarships to support energy sector students within the framework of the #EnergySmartSTART programme. This year's scholarship programme amounts to a total of EUR 30 000 for scholarships for energy sector Masters and PhD students in Latvia.

The #EnergySmartSTART scholarship programme aims to promote education in the energy sector, encouraging the creation of a new generation of professionals and supporting the most promising students in the field. In the spring semester of 2024, six of the most hard-working energy sector students will receive a EUR 1 000 scholarship for the duration of five months to support their studies and research.

“Research and innovation in the fields of energy and renewables is our path to energy independence and addressing the climate change challenge. Over the next few years, Ignitis Renewables plans to invest significantly in promoting the production and availability of green energy in Latvia, the Baltic region and beyond. It is therefore equally important to invest not only in technological solutions, but also in raising the next generation of experts,” says Baiba Lāce, Head of Ignitis Renewables in Latvia.

She added that it is important to motivate the youth to choose studies in the energy sector, where they can not only prove themselves professionally, but also contribute to the environment and society through their knowledge and work. With this scholarship programme, Ignitis Renewables wants to encourage students to choose and acquire a specialisation in the energy sector, as well as to show that we appreciate the passion and ideas of our current students.

“RTU Development Foundation highly appreciates such cooperation between the industry and the academic environment! The initiative of Ignitis Renewables will stimulate students' interest in energy, and in particular in renewable energy, and give them more time to study. Students will be able to get to know the challenges faced by the industry and make contacts that will be useful in their future careers,” points out Anita Straujuma, Executive Director of the RTU Development Foundation.

The #EnergySmartSTART scholarships will be open to Masters and PhD students currently acquiring energy-related programmes such as environmental science, geography, environmental engineering and smart energy at Latvian universities.

Ignitis Renewables is successfully implementing the #EnergySmartSTART educational programme in Lithuania for the third year. It provides both scholarship support for students in the sector and educational content for anyone interested in the energy sector and related topics. In Lithuania, several energy companies have already joined the programme, working together on various initiatives, such as developing scholarship projects for students, organising experience exchange meetings with industry professionals and presenting career opportunities in the energy sector.

Within the framework of the #EnergySmartSTART project, a scholarship support programme for energy sector students has been established in Latvia in cooperation with the RTU Development Foundation.
